Obituary

Charles “Bill” Berglund III

June 5, 1943 – October 27, 2023

Charles William “Bill” Berglund III, 80, of Duluth, MN, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2023 with his son Gregg by his side.

Bill, a military brat, was born on June 5, 1943 to Charles and Nellie Berglund in San Francisco, California. Throughout his childhood Bill would live in many places, but his parents ultimately settled in Medford, Wisconsin where he attended Medford High School before enlisting in the Army at the age of 17. After leaving the Army Bill began his passion for aviation and became a commercial pilot and achieved his certification as an airframe and powerplant mechanic. He would go on to become a flight instructor which he would continue to enjoy for over 50 years. In 1970, he returned to school and enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Superior where he majored in Computer Programming and Business Management. After graduation he began working at the University of Wisconsin-Superior as a computer programmer among other roles. While working at the University of Wisconsin-Superior he reenlisted in the military and joined the Minnesota Air National Guard and was a proud member of the 148th Fighter Wing where he achieved the rank of Master Sergeant. He would go on to work at Lake Superior Paper Industries until his retirement in 2003.

In 1977 he married the love of his life Lori with which he raised his two boys Gregg and Rick. His favorite pastimes involved anything with aviation and just about anything outdoors. He longed for his falls for hunting and his springs for fishing. When he wasn’t outside, he would be found hanging out at the Superior Airport where he was actively involved in the Civil Air Patrol and the Experimental Aircraft Association.

He was a proud father and even prouder grandfather. Some of his best memories were spending time with his grandchildren and watching them grow.

He is preceded in death by his father Charles, mother Nellie, father-in-law William, brother-in-law Gregg, and stepfather-in-law Leonard. He is survived by his wife Lori, son Gregg of Duluth, son Rick (Jackie) of Fargo, ND, grandchildren Taylee, Tyler, Mikayla, Audrey and Natalie, mother-in-law Marvel of Palm Bay, FL, brother-in-law Rick (Janet) of Oviedo, FL and nephews Stephen (Taylor) and Taylor (Cierra) of Oviedo, FL.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Carlton County Disabled American Veterans Chapter 18 in Cloquet, MN where Bill was a lifetime member.

A memorial service with military honors will be held Tuesday November 7 at 3pm at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery – Duluth. A celebration of life will follow at the Buffalo House in Duluth from 4-7pm.
