Michael “Mike” Robert Dean

February 2, 1945 – March 23, 2023

Mike passed away on Thursday March 23rd, 2023 in St. Luke’s Hospice surrounded by family.

Mike was born on February 2nd, 1945 to Mary and Robert Dean in Manistique Michigan. Mike is preceded in death by his Parents Mary and Robert, and his wife Carolyn, paternal grandparents Leo and Gertie Dean, maternal grandparents Alfred and Rachel Cayia, aunts Helen Rowe and Jane Zried, and uncle Alfred Cayia Jr.  Mike is survived by his daughters, Amber and Rachel. Grandchildren Dakota, Nazareth, Jasmine, Abel, Ashton and Azeria,. Brother in-law’s Tom and Dick (Jan) Robertson, and sister in laws Barb (Bill) Robertson Schaff and Marykay (Jim) Van Kempen Robertson and many Cayia cousins.

Michael graduated from Hibbing High School and attended the University of Minnesota Duluth. He went on to attend law school at the University of Minnesota and obtained his law degree. Mike was a Bulldog through and through and served on the alumni board for many years.  Mike was a member of the Alpha nu Omega fraternity and recently received the Lifetime Achievement Award and was inducted into the Alpha Nu Omega Hall of Fame.  Mike worked in the St. Louis County Attorney’s office for 35 years and retired as Assistant County Attorney head of the civil division. Mike continued to serve the Sheriff’s Office as a consultant until a few years ago but continued to be a resource for the Office. Mike was a mentor to many young attorney’s and was known for his knowledge of local government. Mike was awarded the Douglas K. Amdahl Public Attorney Career Achievement Award in 2007 from the Minnesota State Bar Association’s Public Law Section.  

Mike adored his two daughters and also his 6 grandchildren. He was always their biggest supporter in any sports activity. Showing up and cheering from the stands. He always made sure Amber and Rachel were taken care of. Unconditional love is what Mike had for anyone that walked through his path. He loved history, he researched his family roots and spent countless hours on Mike loved food and cooking. He was known for large family dinners, fish fries, and even published an online cookbook. Mike loved Lake Trout fishing in Sioux Narrows on Lake of the Woods and staying at the Rod and Reel Resort.  He enjoyed taking friends on his trips and introducing them to “Island” fishing on Mary’s Island and landing large trout. Mike had an infectious laugh and never took himself too seriously and even had his own series of lawyer jokes.  

Memorial Service will be held at Lakeview Covenant Church 1001 Jean Duluth Road, Duluth, MN 55804 on April 22nd, 2023. Visitation will be at 10:00 am. followed by a service at 11:00. There will be lunch following the service downstairs in the fellowship hall.
